Bosnian Garden Opening Celebration

Our garden opening celebration was a blast. Julia Huterer, the president of the Multicultural Association of Bosnian Seniors and their Friends, started the event by giving a warm welcome to everyone. She congratulated and thanked all the volunteers for putting hundreds of work hours in creating this truly magnificent garden, and gave special praise to agronomists Mr. Miodrag Zakonovic and Ms. Zora Ignjatovic for initiating this project.

Special thanks were expressed to our supporters and partners:

- Social Development Canada, for providing grants for seniors through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, and giving us seed money for the community garden project,

- Mr. Mario Calla, the Executive Director of COSTI Immigrant Services agency, for supporting new initiatives and helping immigrants from Bosnia and other parts of former Yugoslavia integrate faster into Canadian Society,

- Ward 5 Councillor Mr. Peter Milczyn, and the City of Toronto Parks and Recreation Department for setting our garden in Tom Riley Park, and to

- Mr. Solomon Boye, a community garden co-ordinator for helping us in every step of the way in establishing a new community garden in the City of Toronto.

Our distinguished guests, Mr. Mario Calla, the Honourable Laurel Broten, MPP, who cut the ribbon and officially opened the garden, and the Honourable Michael Ignatieff, MP, all extended greetings and offered congratulations to the Multicultural Association of Bosnian Seniors and their Friends for enriching the lives of seniors and making a significant contribution to the community.

There were close to 200 people at the event. Everybody enjoyed the fantastic weather, and took pleasure in strolling through our beautiful organic garden, tasting delicious Bosnian food, and chatting with friends and guests.
