Welcome to the Multi-ethnic Bosnian Community Garden in Toronto

The new Bosnian garden, named "New Horizons Community Garden" was initiated by the members of the "Multicultural Association of Bosnian Seniors and their Friends", a non-for profit organization funded by Social Development Canada (New Horizons for Seniors Program). Our main goal About Us is to reduce the isolation of seniors through various activities, educational workshops, social gatherings, and community sharing initiatives.

In Memoriam

It is with the deepest hurt that we have to announce that our beloved gardener, Miodrag Zakonovic, died on January 1, 2010. Miodrag was a member of our Multicultral Association of Bosnian Seniors and Friends, who first came with the idea of creating our own community garden. All way up until his death, he was a moving force behind all the progressive ideas and the unparallel successes of the garden. Miodrag will always be a part of the Garden and will stay in our thoughts. '

Welcoming students from the neighbouring school

A classroom of students from the Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, and their teacher came to our garden for an educational and a hands-on gardening workshop. The high school students were educated by our members, Zora and Miodrag, both professional agronomists, about environment, earth, composting, planting and organic food. They eagerly participated in an herbal usage and the herbal recognition test. Some of the students were so impressed that they asked to become our newest volunteers.

Members and guests enjoying our annual picnic

The Organic Food Festival was a great success. Over two hundred people came to visit and to taste some of the ethnic food prepared by our gardeners. This year's celebration also included an extremely interesting and useful presentation by Zora Ignjatovic, on how to garden in small spaces, and how in a very small container one can grow a colourful mix of herbs, vegetables, edible flowers and fruits. At the end of the day, there was also a sale of our organically grown veggies to the public, with the proceeds going to our Association.

Julia's Collegues
Julia's colleagues from COSTI Corvetti Education Centre making BBQ in the garden

It was a pleasure to invite COSTI staff to the garden. No matter how many times they come, there is always that " Oh, what a beautiful tomato, oh what a lovely marigold oh.." expression from the people.

Opening of a new Children's Garden

With a great interest of our seniors, especially Miodrag Zakonovic, to educate the younger generations about plants and healthy food, we decided to create a small garden just for children. On Children's Day in May, over thirty young children were taught about planting and they started a Three Sisters garden from seeds of corn, squash and beans. The Children’s Garden has now become a permanent part of the garden and will serve for fun and play for children in future visits.
